Seattle to Boston Bicycle Tour - Part 3

July 7, 2022 to August 2, 2022

Cody, Wyoming to Wisconsin Border

In this section of our journey, we rode from Cody, Wyoming to the border of Wisconsin. Leaving Cody, the landscape changed to grasslands, and open plains, where we spotted several Pronghorn Antelope. After two days of riding through the small towns of Greybull and Ten Sleep, we tackled the Big Horn Mountains. The climb to the top of Big Horn Pass Summit was 22 miles long with 6,200 feet of elevation gain. There were still four more climbs before descending into Buffalo, Wy. Several days later, it was a treat to ride to Devils Tower and camp at the base of this spiritual mountain. When we got to South Dakota the temperature started to rise. We had several days in the upper 90's and low 100's. Riding on the Mickelson Rail Trail, an iconic path that has been converted from abandoned railroad line, we followed the trail for 35 miles to Hill City. This was one of our Bucket List trails. Joe's family joined us in Keystone for a couple of days. We toured Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, and the town of Deadwood. Back on the road, we stopped at the famous Wall Drug as we proceeded through the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. Throughout the middle of the country, there were miles of corn, wheat, oats, and soybean fields as far as the eye could see. We finished this section in Minneapolis, where we stayed with our friends Robert and Mario. They gave us a fantastic tour of the city which concluded with a Minnesota Twins baseball game. Crossing over the Mississippi River we entered our seventh state, Wisconsin. Until next time...
