June 2024
Our journey proceeded to Pittsburgh where we spent a few days exploring the city, including a trolley tour, the annual Art Festival, the famous Duquesne Incline, and Fort Pitt, constructed by the French in the 1700s. Subsequently, our biking route led us through West Virginia and into Ohio. The numerous car-free Rail Trails in Ohio were shaded by trees, providing relief from the mid-western sun. We spent several days on these trails, encountering fellow cyclists along the way. The terrain began to level out in central Ohio. We visited museums and historic sites such as the John and Annie Glenn Museum, the National Road/Zane Grey Museum, the renowned Y Bridge, and witnessed the world's largest basket in Newark, Ohio. In Indiana, we visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to watch a vintage car race. Apart from cycling, we engaged in enjoyable non-cycling activities. The temperature, humidity, and headwinds significantly increased as the entire country was in the midst of an intense heatwave. Combined with the humidity, the heat index reached the low 100s, with a similar forecast for the next 10 days. At this juncture, we made the decision to conclude our tour. Our health and well-being took precedence. Looking back, we encountered numerous kind and friendly individuals like Brother Nicholas, a Catholic Friar, who gifted us a medal for safe travels and protection from evil. One stranger offered us shelter for the night to escape the heat, although we had prior hotel arrangements. On a bike trail, a woman held our hands and prayed for a safe journey. The country and its people never ceased to amaze us. We covered 1,300 miles and ascended over 56,000 feet. Did we return to California? No, but we harbored no disappointment. We shared an unforgettable experience that we will always cherish. We extend our gratitude to everyone for the support and well wishes. Please know that your kindness was deeply appreciated. We look forward to continuing this trip in the future. Until Next Time…
